Minneapolis St. Paul Fashion Week Graced by Prince!
By: Allison Kaplan | Posted: February 23, 2013

Get out! Prince. The Purple One. The Artist. Sexy MF. Our Minnesota treasure. He did his hometown another solid—one even more unexpected than his recent impromptu concerts at the Dakota. Prince attended The Shows on Friday night, part of Minneapolis St. Paul Fashion Week. MNfashion Director Tara Murphy confirmed His Presence (he’d probably use some symbols or numbers in there, wouldn’t he?), although details, of course, were few. A Prince assistant called Murphy on Thursday to say Prince was interested in attending the Friday night Shows. Murphy described a day of “CIA-like meetings” to ensure Prince would have a private evening at Aria at the Jeune Lune. With nearly 500 other people. But of course, it’s Prince. And he’s known for dropping in and slipping out in ghost-like (superhero?) fashion.

The local designers who showed collections last night, and most of the fabulously dressed crowd in attendance had no clue He was in their midst. Then St. Paul Pioneer Press fashion writer Nancy Ngo got wind of the VIP and broke the news via Twitter. When I asked designer Christopher Straub, whose candy-coated collection closed The Shows, how it felt to know Prince was watching, the Project Runway alum asked, “Do we even know if he saw my show? It would be nice if he wanted to buy the whole collection!”

Murphy says Prince arrived before the first designer, and left after the last. She was summonsed to speak to Prince at the end of the evening—and he even removed his sunglasses. That’s all she can say of the conversation, and you know, it’s probably better that way.
